Parapente magazine have just published Phillippe Lami's review of the Artik 3. Here is a quick résumé.I should add that I've never read a bad review by PP magazine! It starts with the usual description of the construction and he talks about the superb leading edge and magnificent risers down to the smallest detail. He found launching the glider very easy in both nil wind, where it rises in one block, and in wind where he found it easy to control the rate at which it came over his head without developing too much power. He flew the 25 at 95 kgs. At trim the speed was 39kmh and he was able to achieve 56 kmh at full bar. He found the bar easy to use and suggested that you adjust your speed system properly so as to be able to use this real performance.During the period of the test he flew the wing for a number of hours including a great thermal flight in the southern French Alps. In thermals he described how he was able to place the Artik by the millimetre. He found the commands very precise and the long (70cm) break travel allowed him to easily slow down the glider in lighter lift.Between thermals he used half bar which gave a speed of 47kmh with very little degradation in the glide. He then goes on to talk about the B3 descent technique to be used with bar. It gave a sink rate of -5/6 mps. He tried traditional ears but they flapped about. He found it very stable in pitch and was able to induce large pitch changes with no sign of the leading edge collapsing. He found he could turn either flat or banked up and there was no sign of adverse yaw when the brakes were first pulled. It was also very steerable using weight shift. He then went into his conclusion which I'll try and give you in full. This wing is a must, like the Nova Mentor 2, which I was very enthusiastic about last year, but it is of course in a different category (ENC). (I should add he was very enthusiastic about the Mentor 2). This Artik 3 is very close to perfection. The little bugs to correct are rare; larger brake handles for flying in winter gloves and balls on the C risers for flying on bar. For the rest I would change nothing, it is perfect! General comportment, cohesion and a remarkable efficiency at trim and at half bar place this wing in the top of the category. It wouldn't be embarrassed by the superb Sigma 8 and offers a more intuitive turn. In brief, it has to be tested, whether you are coming off a new generation EN B or an old EN C. Or indeed if you are stepping down from an EN D. This is the wing to keep, like a 4x4, for flying all the time in all conditions, for pleasure.I should mention the glide performance they measured, with the usual caveats of course. 10.2 at trim with a minimum sink of .99mps. The Delta was tested last year with a glide of 9.7 and the Sigma 8, 9.5. All measurements taken in a cocoon harness which he recommended for the Artik to make the most of the great performance.
I'm flying on 98kg Artik3 25 and looks great. Even in weak conditions the Artik3 is great. When the thermals come the feelings are really great ! Tomaz
